A massive flock of Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo) gathers at the renowned Pakshi Chugga Ghar (Bird Feeding Home) in Khichan village near Phalodi, Rajasthan. Every winter, thousands of these migratory birds, locally known as Kurja or Koonj, arrive from their breeding grounds in Central Asia, Mongolia, and southern Russia, making Khichan one of India's most celebrated bird conservation sites. The open feeding enclosure is filled with hundreds of cranes standing on the gravel-covered ground, while many others circle gracefully overhead against the clear desert sky. Managed by the local community, the feeding ground is surrounded by traditional village houses, boundary walls, and water tanks that form part of the unique conservation landscape.
