A flock of Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo) at the Pakshi Chugga Ghar (Bird Feeding Home) in Khichan village, Rajasthan, India. Locally known as Kurja or Koonj, these are the world's smallest crane species, recognised by their steel-grey plumage, black necks and chests, and distinctive white ear tufts. The birds are seen standing and calling within the community-managed feeding enclosure, with their vocalisations forming a prominent part of the scene. The backdrop includes traditional sandstone buildings and the arid landscape of the Thar Desert surrounding the village. Every year, Demoiselle Cranes migrate thousands of kilometres from Central Asia, Mongolia, and parts of Europe to spend the winter in India, typically between late August and March.
