Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo), locally known as Kurja or Koonj, at the famous Pakshi Chugga Ghar in Khichan village, Rajasthan. The migratory birds gather at the community-managed feeding ground, where they can be seen feeding, walking together, and filling the air with their distinctive calls. Every winter, these elegant cranes migrate thousands of kilometres from Central Asia, Mongolia, and southern Russia to the Thar Desert. At Khichan, local villagers and volunteers continue a decades-old conservation tradition by providing 500–600 kilograms of grain, mainly jowar (sorghum), every morning. The cranes spread across the feeding enclosure while many continue calling to one another, creating the characteristic soundscape for which Khichan is famous.
