Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo), locally known as Kurja, gather at the famous Pakshi Chugga Ghar (Bird Feeding Enclosure) in Khichan Village, Phalodi district, Rajasthan. Every winter, these graceful birds migrate from Central Asia and Mongolia to the Thar Desert, where they are fed and protected by the local community. Densely packed flock feeding on the sandy enclosure, while other cranes circle overhead against a clear blue sky. Traditional flat-roofed village houses and the characteristic desert landscape of western Rajasthan provide the backdrop to one of India's most celebrated community-led bird conservation sites.
