Flock of Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo), locally known as Kurja or Koonj, gathers at the renowned Pakshi Chugga Ghar (Bird Feeding Enclosure) in Khichan Village, near Phalodi in Rajasthan, India. Every winter, these migratory birds travel thousands of kilometres from Central Asia and Mongolia to the Thar Desert, where they are welcomed and fed by the local community. Hundreds of cranes densely covering the sandy feeding ground, while numerous birds soar overhead before landing among the flock. Traditional desert homes, stone boundary walls, and rooftop structures typical of western Rajasthan form the backdrop, highlighting the unique relationship between the village of Khichan and one of India's most remarkable community-led wildlife conservation efforts.
