Unlike other birds that need to warm or incubate their eggs, the Lapwing lays its eggs in what goes up to 50 or even 52 degrees day-time heat, out in the open, in the middle of summer. So it needs to actually cool and moisten them, to prevent the chicks from dying! A Red-wattled Lapwing sits on its eggs to hatch them. These birds are ground nesters and lay eggs on the ground and the eggs are camouflaged among the dry leaves and twigs on the ground. The incubation period takes around 28 to 30 days and the parent can be seen with the wet underside of the body. This is to reduce the temperature of the eggs.
