A Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) peers out of its nest and scans its surroundings. The Myna perches on a branch and stretches itself. Then heads back inside the hollow trunk of a tree. The Common Myna, a native of southern Asia, was widely introduced (mainly for pest control) in the late 1800s in many far-flung areas of the world. Since these introductions, the species has displayed remarkable versatility by establishing itself in abundance in many parts of the new range. With its trim, well-groomed appearance and jaunty, confiding demeanor, it is one of the most familiar birds wherever it occurs.
