In India, the Red-wattled Lapwing (Vanellus indicus) is a striking wader bird commonly found across the Indian subcontinent. It is easily recognized by its bold black-and-white plumage, red facial wattles, and loud, sharp calls. Often seen in open fields, wetlands, farmlands, and urban edges, this bird is known for its alert nature and distinctive “did-you-do-it” call. Red-wattled Lapwings are ground-nesters and fiercely protective of their eggs, frequently performing distraction displays to deter predators.
