A male Himalayan Woodpecker, a striking forest bird native to the Himalayan region. Perched vertically on the trunk of a tree, the bird displays several distinctive features that make it one of the most recognizable woodpeckers of the Indian Himalayas. The male is easily identified by its bright red crown, a feature absent in females, which possess a black crown instead. Its plumage consists of glossy black upperparts contrasted with broad white shoulder patches and white barring on the wings. The bird's white cheeks are marked by a distinctive black "Y"-shaped facial pattern, while a vivid red patch on the lower belly and undertail adds another splash of color.
