In the backdrop of low bird calls, a Himalayan or Darjeeling Pied Woodpecker or Dendrocopos himalayensis is seen pecking on the dry wood of a barren tree in the cold winter in Uttarakhand. These species of birds are found in higher elevations in open forest lands. In India, they are endemic to the Himalayas and the North East.
