A female Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus) perched on a rocky ledge in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, India. The bird displays the subdued brown and tan plumage typical of female Himalayan Monals, providing camouflage within rocky alpine habitats. Distinctive features include a pale blue patch of bare skin around the eyes and a short crest on the head. The species inhabits high-altitude forests, shrublands, and mountain slopes across the Himalayan range, generally between elevations of 2,500 and 4,000 meters. Unlike the brightly colored males, females rely on cryptic coloration for protection in their natural environment.
