The high-altitude landscape of Darma Valley in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. Steep, rugged Himalayan ridges descend into a broad valley where a small cluster of mountain houses is nestled on the valley floor. The lower slopes are covered with patches of pine forest and alpine shrubs, gradually giving way to barren brown terrain at higher elevations. A glacier-fed stream or seasonal waterfall descends through the centre of the mountainside, carrying meltwater toward the valley below. Dense stratocumulus clouds drift across the ridges, obscuring the highest peaks as mist moves through the mountain gaps. Diffused sunlight filters through the cloud cover, casting shifting light and shadow across the remote Himalayan landscape.
