A flock of white domestic geese, descendants of the Greylag Goose (Anser anser), swims gracefully across a calm water body in Odisha. Their bright orange bills and pale plumage contrast beautifully with the soft ripples spreading across the surface. Moving together in a tight formation, the geese display strong social bonding, maintaining close distance as they paddle steadily through the still water. After their swim, the flock gradually makes its way toward the muddy shore to rest and dry their feathers. One by one, they step out of the water, shaking their bodies and partially spreading their wings to release excess moisture. Preening soon follows — a vital behaviour in which they carefully align their feathers and distribute natural oils to restore waterproofing and insulation.
