A pair of Rose-ringed Parakeets (Psittacula krameri) is perched on a tree branch, carefully observing the surroundings. These bright green parrots, easily recognized by their long tails, red beaks, and the male’s distinctive black-and-pink neck ring, are among the most common parakeets found across India’s forests, farmlands, and urban parks. In this remarkable moment, one of the parakeets suddenly flies toward a hollow in the tree trunk, possibly reacting to the presence of a squirrel hiding inside the cavity. Rose-ringed Parakeets often use tree hollows for nesting, and they are known to defend these cavities aggressively from other animals such as squirrels, mynas, or other birds that might compete for the same nesting space.
