A Great Barbet(Psilopogon virens) sits prominently on a tree branch in Mussoorie, actively preparing its nest. While perched, the bird uses its strong beak to peck and chisel into soft or decaying wood, gradually shaping a nesting cavity. Between bouts of excavation, it pauses to scan the surroundings, remaining alert to predators and other birds. The barbet often shifts its position along the branch, testing the wood and clearing out loose debris from the hollow. Its vibrant plumage stands out against the green foliage as it calls loudly, possibly marking territory or communicating with its mate.
