A Brown-fronted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos auriceps) excavates a nest cavity in the moss-covered trunk of a tree in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand. Using its powerful bill, the woodpecker repeatedly chisels into the wood, creating a cavity that will eventually provide shelter for raising its young. Nest excavation is a remarkable feat of engineering, requiring precision, strength and persistence as the bird removes layers of wood to create a suitable nesting chamber. Found across the Himalayan forests of South Asia, the Brown-fronted Woodpecker inhabits montane forests where it feeds on insects and larvae hidden beneath tree bark. Its presence reflects the health and complexity of these forest ecosystems, where old trees provide essential nesting sites for cavity-nesting birds.
