Scally-bellied Green Woodpecker: (Picus squamatus) 35 cms; 1000 to 3300 mts. A green woodpecker with a pale underside, scallopped with black. The male has a crimson crest and the crown and rump are bright yellow. The female is duller and the crimson of the crown is replaced by black, speckled with grey. A fairly common bird, affecting forests of pine and oak and orchards. It clambers on trees and branches, hunting for larvae and pupae of insects. It often to the ground to feed on ants and termites and in winter, often feeds on berries. It has a ringing, double-noted call like "klee-gu".
