Male Scaly-bellied Green Woodpecker at its nest-hole, feeding a chick! Scaly-bellied Green Woodpecker nesting in Landour, Mussoorie, India. This is a resident in the foothills and lower/middle hills of Himalaya. It is also found in the adjoining regions of the Indian Subcontinent, ranging across Afghanistan, Iran, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan. After having foraged for larvae and other grubs from tree bark, the Woodpecker male (the father has a red crest) comes back and regurgitates it at the opening of the nest-hole, in order to feed the chicks. Picus squamatus starts excavating its nest-hole in the month of January, lays eggs by April and incubates them through the month, and the chicks fledge by the end of May.
