Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo) gathered at Pakshi Chugga Ghar in Khichan village, Rajasthan. Known locally as Kurja or Koonj, these migratory birds arrive in the Thar Desert every year after travelling thousands of kilometres from Central Asia, Mongolia, and other parts of Eurasia. They usually spend the winter here from August to March before returning to their breeding grounds. Cranes feeding together inside the dedicated bird feeding enclosure, where local villagers provide grains such as millet and sorghum every day. This community-led tradition has continued for decades and has made Khichan one of the best-known places in India to observe Demoiselle Cranes in large numbers.
