Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo), locally known as Kurja or Koonj, feeding at the Pakshi Chugga Ghar in Khichan village, near Phalodi in Rajasthan. The birds are gathered inside a fenced feeding ground known as the Chugga Ghar, where the local community provides grain every day to support the migratory flock during the winter season. Sorghum (jowar) and other grains are spread across the enclosure, attracting thousands of cranes that arrive to feed together. Every year, these migratory birds travel thousands of kilometres from Mongolia, China, Central Asia, and other parts of Eurasia to spend the winter in the Thar Desert before returning to their breeding grounds in spring.
