A massive open-air hive of giant honey bees hanging from a tree branch in a natural forest environment. The species, Apis dorsata, is known for building enormous single-comb hives in exposed locations such as tall trees, cliffs, and rocky overhangs across South and Southeast Asia. Thousands of worker bees form a dense protective layer known as a “bee curtain” around the honeycomb. This living shield helps defend the colony against predators, harsh weather, and environmental changes while maintaining internal hive temperature and security. The large comb structure can reach impressive dimensions, often growing more than a meter wide, and serves as the colony’s center for honey storage, brood rearing, and communication.
