A thriving colony of the Giant Honey Bee (Apis dorsata) is observed in Wilderness Orchard. Also known as the Rock Bee, Apis dorsata is one of the largest honey bee species native to South and Southeast Asia. Thousands of worker bees cluster around a massive exposed comb, a characteristic nesting structure of this species. Unlike cavity-nesting honey bees, Apis dorsata constructs a single large comb in open locations such as tree branches, cliff faces, and other elevated sites. The colony works collectively to maintain, protect, and regulate the hive. These bees are vital pollinators that support the reproduction of numerous wild plants and crops.
