Pycnonotus cafer or the Red-vented Bulbul is a common Indian city and shrub-land bird that has adapted to life in the fast lane of urban India. It nests in shrubs and short trees, lives on fruit and insects and is flourishing despite habitat challenges. While it is sometimes kept as a cage bird, it is best left in the wild as it is easy to see and get close to... A convivial jovial bird, indeed! Red-vented bulbuls are slim, starling-sized songbirds with predominantly dark plumage. They are typically bold and conspicuous, with repetitive, monotonous calls. Their slim build and curved bill are reminiscent of a honeyeater (e.g. bellbird or tui), although they are not closely related.
