It is only autumn and this Coppersmith Barbet has started excavating its nest hole in a bakain tree, months in advance of its nesting requirement for spring 2022. The wood may be softer or less in demand, and so the couple have figured they might as well plonk down on the home loan and start an early mortgage, in order to get better rates! Wood chips fly as the beak digs in to the soft wood, and prepare the tunnel downwards, to the nesting chamber.
