A male Scaly-bellied Woodpecker observed in the Himalayan region of Joshimath. Recognized by its vibrant green plumage, bright red crown, and distinctive scaly markings across its underparts, this species is one of the most striking woodpeckers found in the Indian Himalayas. Unlike many woodpeckers that spend much of their time on tree trunks, the Scaly-bellied Woodpecker is frequently seen foraging on the ground. In this footage, the bird searches among dry grasses and leaf litter for ants, termites, and other insects that make up a significant portion of its diet. Patches of snow visible in the surrounding habitat reflect the cool mountain environment typical of the Garhwal Himalayas during winter and early spring. These forests and alpine foothills provide ideal habitat for this species
