The closest equivalent we have to a Hummingbird here in India! The Purple Sunbird is capable of rapid wing beats to sustain flight in pause mode, in the same place much like a helicopter, to suck at flower nectar. A male Purple Sunbird is one of nature's many wondrous creations. This bird changes the colour of its plumage to a purple with tints of Green and blue and even maroon when spotted in sunlight. The breeding plumage comes in the spring around March and back to its duller shade around June. The plumage of the female is dull the whole year round.
