A female Asian Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus) perched on a bare branch against a soft blue sky. Her brown plumage is densely marked with cream and white spots and bars, with a long barred tail and a pale, slightly curved bill. The close-up highlights her ruffled head feathers and distinctive markings in the evening light. Unlike the glossy black male, the female’s patterned plumage provides camouflage among branches and foliage. Asian Koels are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of crows and other host birds.
