A White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) perched within the trees of Wilderness Orchard. This medium-sized kingfisher is distinguished by its chestnut-brown head and underparts, bright turquoise-blue wings and back, and a prominent white throat and breast patch. The species also possesses a large red bill adapted for capturing a variety of prey. Despite its name, the White-throated Kingfisher is commonly found far from water and inhabits orchards, agricultural land, gardens, wetlands, and urban areas. It feeds on insects, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, and other invertebrates. The video shows the bird resting on a perch while surveying its surroundings.
