Western Reef Heron (Egretta gularis) observed in coastal habitat in the United Arab Emirates. A dark morph Western Reef Heron standing and foraging near shallow coastal waters. The bird displays characteristic slaty-grey plumage with a contrasting white throat, along with long legs and a pointed slightly curved bill adapted for hunting fish and other aquatic prey in tidal wetlands. Western Reef Herons are common residents of the UAE’s shorelines, lagoons, mudflats, and mangrove ecosystems. The species occurs in both dark and white morphs and is often seen wading slowly through shallow water while searching attentively for food. Its pale or yellowish bill and coastal habitat help distinguish it from similar egret species found in the region.
