A male Purple Sunbird in eclipse plumage in New Delhi. During the non-breeding season, male Purple Sunbirds lose their glossy metallic breeding colors and develop a duller appearance similar to females. The bird is identifiable by the dark central throat band, yellowish underparts, and subtle metallic blue-purple feathers visible on the wings and shoulder area. It also displays the species’ characteristic long, downward-curved bill adapted for nectar feeding. Purple Sunbirds are commonly found in gardens, flowering trees, and urban green spaces across the Indian subcontinent. The video documents seasonal plumage transition and feeding adaptations of this nectar-feeding bird species in Delhi’s urban habitat.
