A Black Kite, also widely known in India as the Pariah Kite, perched calmly on a tree branch in New Delhi. The bird remains alert while occasionally turning its neck backward to scratch and groom itself — a common maintenance behavior among raptors. The Black Kite is one of the most commonly seen birds of prey across Delhi and the Indian subcontinent. It is recognized by its dark brown plumage, hooked black beak, yellow cere, powerful yellow legs, and sharp black talons adapted for hunting and scavenging. Highly adaptable to urban environments, Black Kites are frequently spotted soaring above roads, markets, parks, riversides, and residential neighborhoods throughout Delhi NCR.
