A non-breeding male in the moulting plumage sits on a tree branch in late autumn looking for flowers,. The sunbird is known as a Purple Sunbird because of the male's peculiar characteristic of changing its colours in the breeding season. In the breeding season, this sunbird will be covered in metallic sheen of purple, blue and maroon. This is nature's gift to these birds for successful propagation. Notice the remnants of last's season's breeding plumage. A bluish lin in the centre of the chest from the neck, the wings.
