Monitor lizard is also known as biawak or goannas. Monitor lizards are usually large reptiles, although some can be as small as 12 centimeters in length. Monitor lizards differ greatly from other lizards in several ways, possessing a relatively high metabolic rate for reptiles and several sensory adaptations that benefit the hunting of live prey. A Monitor lizard, the kind that Shivaji used in order to climb up the sides of a fort wall! Various names for it are Bis-cobra in western India, Guishaap or Goshaap in West Bengal and Bangladesh, and ghorpad in Maharashtra.
