A large Asian Water Monitor navigating the muddy mangrove terrain of the Sundarbans region near Sundarban Tiger Camp. The Asian Water Monitor is one of the world’s largest lizard species and is highly adapted to wetland and coastal environments. The reptile moves carefully among dense mangrove vegetation and pneumatophores — the specialized aerial roots that help mangrove trees survive in oxygen-poor tidal mud. These unique swamp forests create one of the most biologically rich ecosystems in South Asia. Asian Water Monitors are powerful carnivores and scavengers known for feeding on fish, crabs, birds, eggs, and small animals.
