A heronry of Little, Cattle, Median and Large Egrets on a Vilayati Keekar or Prosopis juliflora tree, during a north Indian winter breeding season. Median Egret is approximately 65 cm long. It is pure white in color. It is difficult to distinguish from the slightly bigger large egret except in breeding plumage, when filamentous plumes occur on back as well as breast. It is resident throughout the plains of the subcontinent. It frequents jheels, marshes, estuaries, mangrove swamps, etc. It is found often in small flocks in non-breeding season. It feeds chiefly on grasshoppers, bluebottle flies, cicadas and other insects; also frogs, lizards, fish etc. Its nesting season is from November to March.
