No sadder story could any stone have told! This is the spot where a brave woman committed Sati or jumped on her dead husband's funeral pyre to kill herself and commit sati or be cremated with her husband. There is no life without the husband, it would seem... or so their religion and culture made them believe. It was often voluntary and sometimes forced. Our camera caught this very ancient stone sculpture in Panna National Park. Sati stones are the stones erected in memory of those women who sacrificed their life for certain specific purpose, especially for chastity and purity. The term "sati" means "chaste woman" and a religious funeral practice as well. Sati is actually self-immolation of a widow on her husband's funeral pyre.
