Wild Asses carouse as the trucks of salt collectors work in the distant mirage, with the desert's heat reaching a crescendo at around 3 pm! Wild Asses (Equus hemionus khur) in the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India. The Indian wild ass had a range that once extended from western India, through Sindh and Baluchistan, Afghanistan, and south-eastern Iran. Today, its last habitat comprises the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, Little Rann of Kutch and the surrounding areas of the Greater Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. The animal is also seen in the districts of Surendranagar, Banaskantha, Mehsana, and around Kutch. Saline desert, arid grassland and shrublands are its preferred habitat.
