The Little Rann of Kutch has the world's largest population of wild asses. Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary is the only place on earth where Indian wild asses still roam free. The Indian wild ass had a range that once extended from western India, through Sindh and Baluchistan, Afghanistan, and south-eastern Iran. Today, its last habitat comprises the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, Little Rann of Kutch and the surrounding areas of the Greater Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. The animal is also seen in the districts of Surendranagar, Banaskantha, Mehsana, and around Kutch. Saline desert, arid grassland and shrublands are its preferred habitat.
