A mating pair of Spine-tufted Skimmer dragonflies (Orthetrum chrysis), also known as the Brown-backed Red Marsh Hawk, in their natural habitat. The male, with his striking red abdomen, and the ochre-brown female are engaged in the characteristic "mating wheel" position, one of the most remarkable behaviors in the insect world. During this reproductive display, the male uses specialized claspers at the tip of his abdomen to hold the female behind her head. The female then curves her abdomen forward to connect with the male's secondary reproductive organs, forming the distinctive wheel-shaped posture.
