Mountain landscapes and historic settlement of Raini Village, located in the Niti Valley near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. Built on steep rocky slopes overlooking deep Himalayan river valleys, the village is surrounded by the rugged terrain of the Garhwal Himalayas. Raini Village is internationally known as the birthplace of the historic Chipko Movement, one of India’s most influential forest conservation movements led by Gaura Devi and local village women who protected forests through peaceful resistance. The village lies near the confluence of the Rishiganga River and Dhauliganga River and has faced major environmental challenges, including the devastating 2021 flash flood disaster and ongoing land subsidence issues affecting the wider Joshimath region.
