A spectacle unfolds at the Pakshi Chugga Ghar (Bird Feeding Home) in Khichan village, Rajasthan, where thousands of Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo) gather during their annual winter migration. Known locally as Kurja, these elegant birds travel thousands of kilometers from their breeding grounds in Mongolia, Central Asia, and southern Russia to spend the winter in the Thar Desert. A massive congregation of cranes feeding, resting, and socializing within the specially protected feeding enclosure established by the local community. The Pakshi Chugga Ghar is a remarkable example of community-led conservation, where villagers provide hundreds of kilograms of grain daily and maintain a safe environment for the birds.
