Coppersmiths and other Barbets love soft wooded tree trunks that are dead or in decay. This happens to be an exotic tree - the Jacaranda - quite a popular choice for crimson-breasted Barbets! This urban wildlife footage documents the Coppersmith Barbet (Psilopogon haemacephalus) during an important stage of its nesting cycle. The video shows the bird actively completing a tree burrow, repeatedly entering the cavity and ejecting excavated wood material from inside. Unlike many birds that reuse existing holes, barbets carve their own nest cavities using strong beaks, a behavior essential for successful breeding.
