Is this Koel an immature male or female or even an adult female? It is difficult to make out the sex and the stage of maturity of the bird since they look alike at certain stages. OK, we'll spill the beans. This is clearly a female Koel identified by its barred brown and white plumage... It hides in the canopy and leads a more secretive life than the vocal male, and even looks like a raptor or a Shikra thanks to its bars. Sometimes it even resembles a Hawk Cuckoo. Of course, they are all cuckoos! The solo individual is spotted under dense foliage at our Wilderness Orchard in New Delhi in the summer. Notice the movement of the throat and the open mouth.
