A herd of captive Sambhar deer live in the company of Cheetal or Spotted Deer in a South Indian enclosure. While there is ample space for the Sambhar to roam free, their numbers are large. One of the male Sambhar lets off a warning signal by stomping its feet on the ground. Sambar Deer prefer well-wooded areas to live, feed on leaves, vegetation, herbs, fruit, bamboo buds and mushrooms. Sambar deer stand to a height of 135 -150 cm at the shoulder and can weigh up to 300 kg. Males have antlers measuring up to 1m. Its coat is dark brown in colour. It is characterised with large muzzle and broad ears. It has tick fur and orange spots on its body. Males are larger than the females. Its tail is 22- 35 cm long.
