A small group of Indian domesticated pigs or Boar relax in a shallow muddy wetland pool in Odisha during a warm afternoon. Multiple adult boars, along with a young piglet, move slowly through the thick brown clay while several individuals lie partially submerged in the cooling mud. Their coarse, dark, bristled bodies become coated in a protective layer of wet soil as they wallow together in the shallow water. Mud bathing plays an essential role in the survival of wild swine, helping regulate body temperature because they possess very limited sweat glands. The mud coating also acts as a natural barrier against biting insects, parasites, and harsh sunlight.
