An Irrawaddy Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) briefly surfaces in the muddy waters of Chilika Lake in Odisha, India. The smooth grey head rises above the turbid lagoon before slipping quietly back beneath the surface. These shy dolphins are among the most iconic inhabitants of this vast brackish water ecosystem, often spotted in small groups across the lake. Their rounded foreheads and subtle movements make sightings feel fleeting yet special for wildlife watchers and researchers. Chilika Lake, one of Asia’s largest coastal lagoons, provides an important habitat for these rare dolphins and many migratory birds, making the region a significant biodiversity hotspot along India’s eastern coastline.
