A shy bird with long legs, a slaty-grey back, a white face and breast, and a stubby tail, which is often jerked up, flashing a chestnut vent. Seen around the edges of ponds and lakes and in reeds and thickets in marshy areas, stalking prey or skulking in the undergrowth. Can be seen far from water.
