The Shikra (Accipiter badius) is a small raptor widely distributed across India, common in cities, parks, gardens, and open woodland. It is an agile hunter that feeds on small birds, rodents, lizards, and insects, often using surprise attacks from a perch. Adults show sharp yellow eyes, barred underparts, and a long tail with dark bands, while the hooked beak is used for tearing. This video shows a close-up shot of a Shikra perched in a tree, feeding on its catch and wiping its beak clean afterwards.
