A Black Kite (Milvus migrans) stretches its talons and basks in the warm morning sun before settling comfortably on a tree branch. Nearby, a Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) and an Indian Pied Myna (Gracupica contra) feed on the nectar-rich blossoms of the Semal tree (Bombax ceiba), one of the first trees to flower in spring across much of the Indian subcontinent. The brilliant red flowers of the Semal provide an important seasonal food source for a wide variety of birds, attracting parakeets, mynas, barbets, bulbuls, sunbirds and many other species. Their nectar and fleshy petals help sustain wildlife before many other trees come into bloom.
