This Indian Moorhen or Jal murghi nested in our pond in New Delhi after we created the right conditions for them to come and visit us. They liked our wetland habitat in the heart of the city, stayed to breed and have successfully brought up many broods among our reed beds. They get enough feed by way of tadpoles, frogs, insects, larvae, water plants such as water cabbage and enough cover by way of grasses, reeds and water lilies. The Common Moorhen is an aquatic bird and spends most of its time on the water and the ground. It feeds on insects, small aquatic fishes, algae etc. This Common Moorhen is caught walking on the branches of a Bakain or Persian Lilac tree. The bird looks like its comfortably walking on the branches although it is not adapted to living on trees.
